Shichimi Togarashi adds a fragrant, umami-packed heat to Japanese cuisine as well as everyday dishes.
Known as Japanese Seven Spice Blend, Shichimi Togarashi is a seasoning used in noodle soups like udon and ramen, but it’s also great on rice, eggs, and grilled meats.
Pairs deliciously with Japanese Cuisine, Noodle Dishes, Soups, Seafood, Eggs, Grilled Meats, Tempura, Rice, Salad Dressing, Rice Cakes, Crackers.
Add Shichimi Togarashi when you try your hand at Japanese dishes like ramen and udon. It’s also fantastic sprinkled on grilled meats – make skewers like yakitori if you want to keep things traditional. We’d also recommend it atop rice dishes, tempura, gyoza, and mixed into salad dressings, but don’t be afraid to use it in unexpected places, like popcorn, crisps, or even a chocolate ganache!
Shichimi Togarashi dates back to 17th-century Japan, the Edo period, when herb dealers in present-day Tokyo began selling this blend for its medicinal properties. Street vendors soon adopted it as a seasoning and it became a best-seller at festivals. The name literally translates to “seven-flavoured pepper”.
