  • Origin & History

    This bright red sea salt whose proper name is Alaea Rouge is the salt used by Hawaiian people in their everyday life. Its color comes from the vibrant local volcanic clay, which is absorbed by salt grains during the drying process. This salt is rich in iron, which adds a zesty and slightly nutty aftertaste.


    It is perfect to season traditional Hawaiian dishes like Lau Lau (pork rolled in taro leaves) or Poke (raw fish salad), but it is also a fantastic match with grilled meat or fish since it pairs excellently with smoky flavors. It also makes a gorgeous vibrantly hued garnish.
